MetaMask Adds Social Login with Google and Apple for Easier Wallet Access

Date:

Simplifying crypto wallet management

MetaMask, the leading self-custodial crypto wallet by Consensys, has introduced a new social login feature that allows users to create, back up, and restore wallets using their Google or Apple accounts.

Traditionally, managing a non-custodial wallet required users to secure a 12-word Secret Recovery Phrase (SRP). This process, while secure, often intimidated newcomers to crypto. With the new update, MetaMask streamlines wallet creation by letting users sign in through their existing social accounts and set a password.

How the new feature works

When users create a wallet via Google or Apple login, the SRP is generated in the background. It can later be retrieved through the same social login and password, reducing friction for those who may struggle with handling recovery phrases.

However, MetaMask highlighted an important safeguard: if a user loses their password, the wallet cannot be recovered. This ensures that the self-custodial nature of the wallet remains intact.

Security remains in user’s hands

MetaMask clarified that no single entity, not even MetaMask itself, can access the full SRP. The company emphasized that a truly self-custodial wallet must have a recovery component that is independent of any platform. In this case, the user’s password serves as that critical key.

A step toward mainstream adoption

By integrating Google and Apple social logins, MetaMask lowers the entry barrier for millions of potential users who may find traditional crypto wallet setups challenging. This move highlights the company’s effort to make cryptocurrency wallets more accessible without compromising decentralization.
