Trezor Launches Safe 5 Crypto Hardware Wallet with Bitcoin-Only Version

Date:

Trezor, a leading manufacturer of crypto hardware wallets, has announced the launch of its latest flagship device, the Trezor Safe 5. This new hardware wallet includes a bitcoin-only version, emphasizing Trezor’s commitment to enhancing self-custody of digital assets. The announcement was made at BTC Prague 2024, where Trezor also introduced its “Trezor Expert” onboarding service, offering personalized one-to-one sessions to assist customers with their crypto cold-storage setup.

Advanced Security Features

The Trezor Safe 5 hardware wallet is designed to securely store, manage, stake, and use thousands of cryptocurrencies through the Trezor Suite desktop and mobile app. Key features include:

  • Larger Color Touchscreen: Enhanced with haptic feedback for improved user experience.
  • New Secure Element: Provides robust protection for sensitive information and performs cryptographic operations.
  • Enhanced Backup Process: A 20-word backup system using Shamir’s secret sharing for multi-share backup, ensuring no single point of failure.

Trezor’s devices stand out in the market as open-source, allowing the community to audit and quickly fix vulnerabilities. While this transparency might pose risks if the device is stolen, the Trezor Safe 5’s secure element has achieved an EAL 6+ certification, indicating its ability to withstand sophisticated attacks.

Innovative Backup Solutions

The Trezor Safe 5 offers an advanced backup process, enabling users to upgrade from a standard single-share backup to a more secure multi-share backup. To protect wallet backup phrases from fire, water, and physical damage, Trezor will release a 20-word version of its Trezor Keep Metal solution in July. The new device also supports legacy backup processes, ensuring compatibility and flexibility.

Meeting Crypto Enthusiast Needs

“Many crypto enthusiasts lack trust in exchanges and seek a secure and user-friendly way to manage their crypto assets,” said Trezor CEO Matěj Žák. “With hardware wallets often designed more for ‘hodling’ rather than everyday use, we identified an opportunity to innovate. The Trezor Safe 5 is the ultimate hardware wallet for users seeking both high security and daily utility.”

Bitcoin-Only Version and Availability

The Trezor Safe 5 is priced at $169, with pre-orders available for the bitcoin-only and Black Graphite versions, shipping in July. The Green Beryl and Violet Ore versions will be available by mid-August. This latest release builds on Trezor’s previous offerings, such as the Trezor Safe 3, which targeted crypto newcomers and novices to encourage self-custody of digital assets.

The Trezor Safe 3 bitcoin-only versions were limited to 2,013 devices, reflecting Trezor’s launch year. Now, Trezor will offer an unlimited edition of the orange shade bitcoin-only Trezor Safe 3 and the new Trezor Safe 5.

Personalized Onboarding with Trezor Expert

To complement the new hardware, Trezor has introduced Trezor Expert — personalized onboarding sessions designed to provide expert knowledge and reassurance. This service aims to assist customers in setting up their crypto cold-storage devices and understanding the intricacies of self-custody solutions.

The Trezor Expert service, priced at $99, will be available globally, ensuring that only the customer knows their wallet backup and other sensitive information.

By launching the Trezor Safe 5 and its personalized onboarding service, Trezor continues to lead the way in providing secure, user-friendly solutions for managing digital assets. This launch encourages the adoption of self-custody practices among crypto enthusiasts, offering both advanced security and everyday usability.
